CLEAN WATER PROJECTS

PEAK’s initial work in Kenya focused on clean water projects at a number of schools in the Meru area. Through partnerships with various churches and Rotary Clubs, plus a grant from Rotary International, we were able to install clean water systems at more than 125 schools over a period of several years. The banner above shows Oljorai Secondary School where a system was installed recently.

The systems consist primarily of rainwater harvesting gutters on school roofs or other structures, water tanks, water filters, and handwashing stations. Students and their families are trained in WASH principles – water, sanitation, and hygiene – and taught the importance of consistently drinking clean water, hand-washing, and much more. We have also provided new latrines at a number of schools, which has made a big impact.

The clean water projects have continued and expanded to include the areas of Samburu, Nakuru, Nkubu, and Tharaka, including a number of women’s villages and other communities. It’s gratifying to see how these projects have helped provide better health conditions and improved academic performance, plus a significant decrease in water-borne illnesses.
